چکیده

The UH8K wide field camera of the CFHT was used to image 0.68 deg2 of sky. From these images, ∼20,000 galaxies were detected to completeness magnitudes V < 23.5 and I < 22.5. The angular correlation function of these galaxies is well represented by the parameterization ω(θ) = AW θ−δ . The slope δ ' −0.8 shows no significant variation over the range of magnitude. The amplitude AW decreases with increasing magnitude in a way that is most compatible with a ΛCDM model (Ω0 = 0.2,Λ = 0.8) with a hierarchical clustering evolution parameter > 0. We infer a best-fit spatial correlation length of r00 ' 5.85 ± 0.5h−1 Mpc at z = 0. The peak redshift of the survey (I ≤ 22.5) is estimated to be zpeak ∼ 0.58, using the blue-evolving luminosity function from the CFRS and the flat Λ cosmology, and r0(zpeak) ' 3.5±0.5h−1 Mpc. We also detect a significant difference in clustering amplitude for the red and blue galaxies, quantitatively measured by correlation lengths of r00 = 5.3 ± 0.5h−1 Mpc and r00 = 1.9 ± 0.9h−1 Mpc respectively, at z = 0.

Measuring the Angular Correlation Function for Faint Galaxies in High Galactic Latitude Fields

A photometric survey of faint galaxies in three high Galactic latitude fields (each ∼ 49 arcmin2) with sub-arcsecond seeing is used to study the clustering properties of the faint galaxy population. Multi-color photometry of the galaxies has been obtained to magnitude limits of V ∼ 25, R ∼ 25 and I ∼ 24. Angular correlation analysis is applied to magnitude-limited and color-selected samples of ...

The Evolution of the Luminosity Function in Deep Fields: a Comparison with Cdm Models

The galaxy Luminosity Function (LF) has been estimated in the rest frame B luminosity at 0 < z < 1.25 and at 1700 Å for 2.5 < z < 4.5 from deep multicolor surveys in the HDF-N, HDF-S, NTT-DF. The results have been compared with a recent version of galaxy formation models in the framework of hierarchical clustering in a flat Cold Dark Matter Universe with cosmological constant. The results show ...

Effects of galaxy mergers on the faint IRAS source counts and the background

Binary merging constitutes a complementary mode of galaxy evolution to the canonical hierarchical clustering theory. This merger-driven evolution not only influences the galaxy mass distribution function, but may drive the main galactic activity cycles, such as starbursts and the activity in the nuclei (AGNs). In this paper, we use galaxy aggregation dynamics together with a possible merger-dri...

The Clustering of Faint Galaxies and the Evolution of ξ(r)

The two-point angular correlation function, ω(θ), is constructed from a catalog of 13,000 objects in 24 fields distributed over an area of 4 deg and complete to a limit of R = 23.5. The amplitude and slope of our correlation function on arcminute scales are in broad agreement with recent CCD results in the literature and decreases with depth. No evidence is found for a flattening of the slope o...

Galaxy clustering in the Herschel deep field

We present a study of the angular correlation function as measured in the William Herschel Deep Field, a high galactic latitude field which has been the subject of an extensive observing campaign from optical to infrared wavelengths. It covers 50 arcmin and with it we are able to investigate the scaling of the angular correlation function to B ∼ 28, R, I ∼ 26,K ∼ 20 and H ∼ 22.5. We compare our...
